My muse finally decided to cooperate. So, now I have finally, finally gotten a Doumeki/Watanuki fic onto the press.

Title: Acquiring Kisses
Fandom: xxxHOLiC
Pairing: Doumeki/Watanuki
Rating: PG-13
Word count: Around 2410
Disclaimer: Not mine, CLAMP's
Warnings: There's slashy kissage and Watanuki curses. A lot. For good reason, I keep thinking.

"Hurry up!"

Watanuki scowled as he ran. Doumeki was ahead of him, lacking his bow out of sheer bad luck, and the other boy kept glancing behind him to make sure Watanuki hadn't fallen behind. They were running to the school, and Watanuki kept hoping that - if Doumeki's bow should be too far, too late - the spirit that guarded the school would gobble up their pursuer as soon as they crossed the gate. Doumeki's form was perfect as he jumped up and twisted onto the top of the gate, reaching down to pull Watanuki up.

"Stop it! I don't need your help!" he said when he was hauled over the gate with a strength that should so not be owned by a high school student.

"Shut up," Doumeki hissed before jumping down.

The bow and quiver were waiting for Doumeki on a bench near where the archery club practiced. Watanuki was close behind him, scowling more than ever when Doumki's lips quirked up at him.

What? he wanted to scream at Doumeki, but settled for sinking to the ground next to his feet. I *am* good at running, you know. Just because you're so good at soccer doesn't mean the rest of us mere mortals aren't.

Slow motion as Doumeki drew the bow. No arrow, as expected, but Watanuki could still see the outline of one in the shadows and the subtle glow that shot through the air as Doumeki released it. The spirit was snatched from existence. Watanuki winced when he heard a shrill scream, but breathed a sigh of relief soon after.

Doumeki leaned down. "Okay?" Watanuki's glare didn't lessen, even when Doumeki's hand slid across his brow to check his temperature. "You ran pretty well, considering."

"And just what the hell is that supposed to mean?" Watanuki snapped, brushing away Doumeki's hand and standing. "Just forget it." He waited until the other boy had picked up his bow before starting toward the gate. "You're probably expecting another week of lunches for this, aren't you? Bastard."

"It isn't necessary."

That brought Watanuki to a grinding halt. His head was spinning. He might have gotten whiplash from turning so fast. "What?" Had he slipped into another dimension without knowing it?

"A week of dinners will be fine."

Maybe not an alternate dimension then. Doumeki was grubbing after his food, as usual.

"Argh, you asshole. You'd better be grateful that the mighty Watanuki is gracing you with such excellent food!"

--

"Satoimo nikorogashi," Watanuki said by way of presenting dinner. "It's my first time cooking with taro root, so tell me if it's good."

It was awkward, having Doumeki here, in his apartment and eating his food. Not that Doumeki didn't eat his food already, but... it just seemed so domestic to see the other boy sitting cross legged in the middle of everything that was Watanuki's.

"Don't you have a television?" Doumeki asked.

Watanuki's brow twitched. "Does it look like I have time to watch tv? I sold it months ago once Yuuko started making me work nights." A pause as he watched Doumeki remain as nonplussed as ever to this new scrap of information. "So sorry that I don't have one to offer you some decent entertainment."

"It's fine."

"Geez, you're such an ass."

--

"Kinpira gobo."

Watanuki raised a brow at Doumeki and waited until the boy had slipped into the slippers before handing over the bowl of braised burdock. Doumeki shrugged at him and took his seat in the center of the apartment.

"I expect grand thanks for making this," Watanuki declared.

But Doumeki was too busy eating what was - apparently, and entirely on accident - a favorite dish to pay attention to Watanuki.

--

"Don't cook tonight," Doumeki told him as they headed to class the next morning. "We're going to the movies."

Watanuki instantly felt the eyes of the entire student body lock onto him. A shiver ran up his spine. "We're going where?!"

Doumeki shot him an irritated look. "To the m-"

"Shut up! I heard you the first time!" Watanuki felt the distinctive menace of Doumeki's fan club sneaking up behind him. Distracted by that, his glare was not quite up to its full potential. Not that it would made an ounce of difference. "What makes you think I'm free tonight?"

"I was there when Yuuko gave you the night off, idiot," Doumeki said. "Don't you remember anything?"

"My memory is just fine," Watanuki snarled. "Argh - whatever! Fine, just-" his voice lowered into a hiss, "don't ever say weird things like that in school ever again!"

--

Doumeki showed up at Watanuki's apartment at nine-thirty, exactly. He took in Watanuki's t-shirt and jeans in a single sweep.

"What?" Watanuki asked that blank expression, a tad defensively. "Were you expecting me to dress up?" A beat. "Why are you here?"

"I came to make sure you wouldn't run away."

Watanuki bristled. "Idiot. I'm not going to run away."

--

Doumeki had to know that movie theaters and Watanuki didn't equal goodness. Had to know. But that knowledge apparently hadn't stopped Doumeki from buying them tickets.

"Do you want popcorn?" Doumeki asked, looking toward the concession stand.

"Are you joking?" Watanuki shot back. "It's probably stale."

Doumeki made a noise - maybe of agreement, but Watanuki couldn't be sure. Then, "we'll be having dinner afterward anyway."

"I'm not going to cook this late," Watanuki snapped. "It'll almost be midnight by the time we get out of here!"

The slight smirk that Watanuki caught on Doumeki's face right before the other boy turned away made him think that Doumeki had chosen this show time for reasons that he absolutely did not want to know about.

--

Watanuki went into the theater without knowing the movie title or the movie summary and left the theater in the same fashion. He could only remember how, immediately after the movie title flashed across the big screen, Doumeki had grabbed his hand.

It was to keep away the spirits, of course.

--

Doumeki walked him home. Watanuki was sure that he only did so in hopes of snagging some late night snack from his fridge. (Watanuki's cooking was, after all, very good, and both of them knew it.) So, when they reached the door to his apartment, Watanuki pulled out his keys, but did not immediately invite Doumeki inside. Even if he couldn't remember a single second of the movie, he did remember their conversation beforehand, and he was not going to cook. Not this late. Not at all.

But that was just fine with Doumeki. He hadn't planned on getting dinner or getting invited in.

Watanuki wasn't quite sure how the next string of events happened. One moment, he was turning toward Doumeki on the verge of telling him off and driving him back home, and the next moment, he was being pressed against the door of his apartment and-

Was that Doumeki's mouth moving against his?!

He pushed at Doumeki's shoulders. More than ever now, Watanuki wished that he was stronger than Doumeki - just this once, but then Doumeki did something that unerringly dragged a moan from his throat and... Where the hell did a guy get off on kissing like that? Shit, Watanuki thought, and then, the still pressure that had kept him against his door eased and released him. He sagged and fiercely clutched the doorknob to keep from falling to the ground.

"Bastard," he growled. "What the hell was that for?"

"As thanks," was the reply - cool tone, but with amusement lacing the edges. "For the kinpira gobo."

Shit, the part of Watanuki's brain that had been left alive thought once more, the meal hadn't been that good.

--

Watanuki told Doumeki that Yuuko would be giving him errands for the rest of the week and wouldn't be able to make dinner for the next few nights. It wasn't that he was trying to avoid Doumeki after that whole kissing thing that he didn't want to think about. Of course not. Men didn't run away from such things. Still, he was grateful for the convenience.

He fetched gallons of water from some fountain in the middle of a park for all three nights of the full moon and was thusly forced to play shiritori with Mokona the entire time. In the afternoons, Yuuko dragged him to a shop that he wasn't even sure existed in this world, just so he could carry back all of the sake she bought.

He was tired by the end of it, but for some reason, could not sit still. It did not help Watanuki in the slightest that, when he was at school and perhaps finally getting relaxed, Doumeki would give him these looks. There was no deciphering the looks or the way they would make Watanuki restless all over again. And no matter how many times Watanuki caught him and glared back, the looks did not stop.

At random points throughout the day, Watanuki would find his gaze wandering. He saw Doumeki practicing with his archery friends, and walking to class in front of him in the halls. And at lunch, when they ate with Himawari, he was not, for once, distracted by the girl's glittering presence. And there was no helping the fact that he could feel a phantom pressure on his mouth when he caught sight of the archer, but he did his best to ignore it.

--

"What's wrong?" Doumeki asked.

They were at Watanuki's apartment again. It had been a while.

"Nothing's wrong," Watanuki snapped. "Stop assuming that there are problems!"

"You're more tense than usual," Doumeki pointed out.

"Like you care!"

"And you made kinpira gobo again."

Watanuki flushed before he could stop himself. "Don't read too much into these things! I had extra burdock. I had to do something with it."

--

Doumeki kissed him again before he left.

"As thanks," Doumeki had said, but Watanuki wasn't sure.

--

"Watanuki," Yuuko catcalled from her seat just inside the shop. "You've been a wreck lately. Any reason why?"

Watanuki swept a little harder at the entrance and scowled at her. "As if you don't already know," he muttered.

"Tell me anyway," she said and her smile grew wide with expectation. "I'd like to hear." When Watanuki still stubbornly refused to speak and only attacked the pile of dust with his broom all the more fiercely, Yuuko took a sip of her sake and her eyes fluttered at him from over the rim of her cup. "Is it Doumeki?"

"Could it be anyone else?" he grumbled.

Her 'mmm' of comfort was not comforting at all. "And?"

"And? And nothing," Watanuki said. "Nothing at all."

"This nothing seems like something," Yuuko cooed. "So, Doumeki's done nothing?"

Watanuki scowled. "Absolutely nothing."

"And that's the problem?"

"Yes, it's the problem!" he snapped. "Doumeki - that bastard, that arrogant, horny bastard-"

"Horny?" Yuuko mouthed to Mokona with some amusement.

"Kisses me! And then - nothing!" His grip tightened on the broomstick and if he was imagining it to be Doumeki's neck he was squeezing, he didn't tell. "He just leaves."

Yuuko stood and leaned toward him without stepping near the pile of dirt he'd collected. "Watanuki." Her long fingers lifted his chin and she smiled at his glare and frown. "You are a seventeen-year-old boy."

"And?"

She looked to Mokona. "All boys his age are horny, right?"

"Right!" agreed Mokona.

"I am not horny!"

Yuuko nodded sagely, reclaiming her seat and her sake with her eyes closed. "Of course not, Watanuki. You're just frustrated."

Watanuki shook his fist. "Right!"

"And angry."

"Exactly!"

"And really wanting to have sex right now."

"Absolute - Stop it! Stop making me say strange things!"

--

The next night, Yuuko sent Doumeki and Watanuki on a mission. Another theater. More spirits than Watanuki thought were strictly necessary. People in white painted masks danced around both of them and made them dance too. Watanuki supposed the two of them learned the motions to satisfaction because in the next moment, they were dressed in strange ceremonial garments and forced to dance again. Yuuko met them outside of the theater and took the clothes from them with a gleeful squeal that made him cringe. He just wanted the night to be over. He'd been in Doumeki's presence for too long for one night already. Watanuki felt like he was ready to snap if he didn't get to his bed soon.

Doumeki and Yuuko saw his weariness at the same time, but while Doumeki stayed silent, Yuuko smiled at him and said, "Doumeki, why don't you take him home?"

A firm nod from the archer and Watanuki was being led back to his apartment. He caught all of Yuuko's voice calling after them.

"Don't forget a goodnight kiss!"

He chose to ignore it.

--

Doumeki dropped Watanuki into the bed. "You haven't been getting enough sleep."

"Not my fault," murmured Watanuki, throwing an arm over his eyes. He was a bit too tired to put in the effort it took to sound angry. Silence for a while and Watanuki thought that the other boy might have already left. He shifted his arm just in time to see Doumeki leaning toward him. "Are you going to kiss me again?"

The archer had stilled inches away from Watanuki's face. "You told me once that it's always best to do as Yuuko says."

"Idiot," Watanuki scowled and summoned up just enough energy to turn on his side and away from Doumeki's too-near face. "Go away."

Silence again, but this time Doumeki had left.

--

It was Sunday. Watanuki was at Yuuko's shop and he was growing more and more concerned about the way she was watching him. She wasn't even drinking, which was perhaps the biggest concern of all. Yuuko was always drinking. And she was always mysterious and tricky and that was the way this world was. And even though Watanuki knew that with every fiber of his being...

"You could have let him kiss you, you know," she said.

"What are you talking about?"

"Doumeki," she said and Watanuki was quite thrown by her straight answer. "You could have let him kiss you."

Watanuki frowned at her, fully prepared to declare that he had no idea what she was talking about, but he found himself speaking the truth anyway. That was the strange thing about Yuuko's shop. Just being near it made Watanuki do things differently than he would have only yesterday.

"He was only doing it because you told him to," he said and a part of him was surprised at how dull his voice sounded. "And before, it was only because he was grateful for a meal."

"I wouldn't have told him to do it if it wasn't important, if it wasn't necessary for you." Now Yuuko was frowning at him. Her long pipe was still at her side.

"It's hitsuzen then?" he asked and laughed. "I don't have a choice. Is that it? And he doesn't either?"

"Absolutely not," she told him. "It's necessary precisely because it isn't hitsuzen. It's not hitsuzen, but it is good for you. When he kisses you, it's because he chose to do so."

A quiet moment settled between them, but Watanuki decided that it was not a bad moment because he was smiling - just a little. "Good for me? Is that all there is to it?"

The world realigned itself when Yuuko grinned back at him, lifting her pipe to her lips for a slow drag. Her 'mmm' was thoughtful. "Perhaps," she answered. "What will you do now?"

Watanuki shrugged, echoing her mysterious nature for a moment before pulling out a bottle of sake. "I'll think of something. Sake?"

"Of course," she said and held out her cup. She was careful to wait until she'd taken the bottle of sake away from Watanuki before adding, "And tempura kakiage, too!" His responding shriek of indignation was very rewarding.

Lovely story! :D Watanuki's a bit milder than usual yet still at denial stage XD, but hey! he's getting paid for cooking in kisses! XDDD /insert fangirling here/
Errrm may I beg for a continuation? *puppy eyes* Call me a pervert, but I'd love to see them go further than kissing XD

:P I'd cook for kisses. But yeah, I agree that Watanuki was pretty mild. I'm really much more of a Doumeki-type, so I have some trouble being... pissed off. XP

As for a continuation, I can try. I'll have to beg and plead and bribe my muse, but I'll do my best.

I'm gathering up thoughts for a continuation. And since this was mostly from Watanuki's POV, Doumeki's definitely going to be the lead for the next one.

good story! Please carry on if you have the time and muses etc, it's funny and kinda sweet. Though I'd never even considered this pairing ... obviously I don't have the true fangirl mentality...

You really haven't considered Doumeki/Watanuki? *boggles* Wow. Really. Maybe it's because I ship slash in nearly every fandom I touch, but I couldn't imagine Holic without the D/W.

Thank you for reviewing. With all these reviewers asking for a continuation, my muse has started to feed me things for Doumeki to do.

Hi! I know it's kind of weird to leave a comment more than a year after a story was posted, but I don't know how I missed this the first time around. I've just been craving Donuts, and going through the [livejournal.com profile] doumekiwatanuki archives I found this.

Sooo anyway! I really liked this: it was well-written, very cute, and, I thought, in character.

(Er, and I quite liked your Loveless fics too.)

Sorry to be so incoherent! It's past time I went to sleep. :)
